Artists Bio

Based in Newfoundland and Labrador, Christina Blanchard is interested in sharing the people, places, and stories of her home. Born in 1991, Christina grew up in small town Newfoundland where she enjoyed drawing and painting from an early age.

Since earning a degree in Engineering, she has spent the past 10 years working, traveling, and building a remote cabin on the coast. From these experiences she has gained a new appreciation for her home province.

Christina’s paintings celebrate the rural way of life and explore how traditions are practiced in modern ways. Christina has participated in several group exhibitions, including Feels Like Home Art Exhibit in 2022 where her painting “How to Hold a Hammer” won the peoples choice award.

Artists Statement

I am a self-taught oil painter who shares stories of life in rural Newfoundland and Labrador. I paint landscapes, portraits, and figures in nature, often showing traditional life as it exists today.

My artwork is based on my first hand experiences exploring the island with family and friends. I take photographs to use as inspiration and reference for my oil paintings.

Growing up in Newfoundland and Labrador, the narrative of my home province was told in a harsh light. The fishery that sustained the province was over, traditions were dying, and outport communities were being abandoned. Since moving back to my home province, I have found that traditions and communities have survived despite the hardships. A rural life surrounded by nature can be full of excitement, tradition, romance, and mystery. I feel it is important to share this way of life and encourage others to reconnect with their home in nature.
